TPO
Understanding TPO Roofing
TPO stands for thermoplastic olefin or polyolefin and is made up of polypropylene and ethylene-propylene rubber. While it’s not important to remember the fancy names, it can be helpful to understand what purpose they serve. Polypropylene is used in the manufacturing of a wide variety of household and industrial products due to its durability and flexibility, as well as the slippery quality that allows it to repel moisture. Ethylene-propylene rubber is known for its ability to resist weather, heat and oxidation, and ozone rays.
TPO roofing refers to the single-ply three layer roofing membrane that is commonly used on commercial and industrial buildings. It typically is white or light colored. TPO roofing has become a popular choice for commercial roofing due to its durability, energy efficiency, and cost effectiveness. TPO roofing works best on flat roofs or low-slope dormers where it won’t be seen. The white or light colored membranes tend to get dirtier more quickly, so it’s not always the best option for areas with high visibility.
The Benefits of TPO Roofing
- TPO composition: TPO roofing consists of three layers – a TPO base layer, a polyester-reinforced fabric center, and a TPO top layer. This combination of layers and materials results in a flexible and durable roofing membrane that is more resistant to tears, punctures, or other damage.
- Ease of installation: TPO roofing is relatively easy to install when done by someone with the right knowledge and training. Our expert crew guarantees quality installation that maximizes the life of your roof.
- Heat-welded seams: After adhering the TPO roofing, every seam is heat-welded to create a strong, watertight bond. I&E Construction uses top quality materials and equipment then inspects everything to ensure there are no loose ends that would cause seam failure.
- Energy efficient: One of the best features of TPO roofing is its energy efficiency. The white or light colors of the membrane reflect sunlight away from the building, which in turn reduces heat absorption and lowers cooling costs.
- UV and chemical resistance: TPO can withstand damage from ultraviolet (UV) rays as well as ozone and chemical exposure, which extends its lifespan and is another way to help lower cooling costs in hot weather.
- Environmentally friendly: As an increasing number of home and business owners strive to use more environmentally friendly construction materials, TPO has grown in popularity for many reasons:
- ✔ 100% recyclable
- ✔ Free of environmentally harmful chemicals such as chlorine
- ✔ Contributes to cleaner air inside buildings, especially in urban areas
- ✔ Lowers cooling costs, and therefore energy consumption, in the summer
- ✔ Can be ENERGY STAR rated (depending on the manufacturer)
